10 Faith-Filled Journaling Prompts to Nourish Your Mind and Soul

There is something sacred about putting pen to paper.

Long before journaling became a wellness trend, the writers of Scripture were doing it. Pouring out laments, recording miracles, wrestling with doubt, and declaring the faithfulness of God. The Psalms themselves are essentially a journal. Raw. Honest. Searching. And deeply, beautifully met by God.

Journaling is one of the simplest and most powerful wellness practices you can build into your life, not because writing has magic in it, but because honest reflection opens the door to God's voice.

If you've never journaled before, or if you've fallen away from the habit, this post is your gentle invitation to begin again.

Why Christian Journaling Is Good for You

Research consistently shows that expressive writing reduces stress, improves emotional clarity, and supports mental health. But for the believer, journaling offers something even deeper. A space to:

  • Hear your own heart more clearly

  • Identify where fear, shame, or unbelief may be taking root

  • Record God's faithfulness so you don't forget it in hard seasons

  • Pray with greater focus and intention

  • Process grief, joy, confusion, and gratitude with God rather than alone

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to "guard your heart above all else, for everything you do flows from it." Journaling is one of the most practical ways to keep watch over your heart.

10 Faith-Filled Journaling Prompts

You don't need a fancy journal or a perfectly quiet morning. You just need a few minutes and a willingness to be honest. Try one prompt at a time, or work through them slowly over several weeks.

1. What am I carrying right now that I haven't given to God? Write it out- every worry, every weight. Then, at the bottom of the page, write a simple prayer releasing each one to Him.

2. When did I last feel truly at peace? What was present in that season? Look for patterns. What conditions help your soul settle? Ask God how to cultivate more of those.

3. What does God's Word say about what I'm struggling with most right now? Choose one struggle and search for a Scripture that speaks to it. Write out the verse and sit with it.

4. How have I seen God's faithfulness in the last 30 days? Even in hard seasons, look for the small mercies. Write down at least three. Gratitude is a wellness practice.

5. What emotion am I most afraid to bring to God, and why? God can handle your anger, your grief, your confusion. The Psalms prove it. What are you holding back?

6. What does my body need right now that I've been ignoring? Rest? Movement? Nourishment? Stillness? Write honestly about how you've been treating God's temple.

7. Where do I sense God inviting me to grow or change? Not in a shame-filled way. In a tender, hopeful way. What is the Spirit stirring in you?

8. What lie have I been believing, and what is the truth of Scripture? Write the lie on one side. Find a verse that counters it and write that on the other. Speak the truth out loud.

9. Who in my life needs prayer right now, and what do I want to ask God for them? Intercession is an act of love. Let your journal become a place of prayer for others.

10. If I truly believed God was for me today, how would I live differently? Let this one sit. Write without editing yourself. This prompt has a way of unlocking something real.

A Simple Way to Start

You don't need to answer every prompt in one sitting. Choose one that feels most alive to you today. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Write without stopping, without editing, without performing.

Just you and God and an honest page.

That is enough. That is, in fact, a beautiful place to begin.

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." — Psalm 139:23
